The Foundation for Information Technology Education (FITE) is pleased to announce that the Betty Stevens-Frecknall Scholarship committee selected the recipients for 2013-2014 academic year.

Betty Stevens-Frecknall left a portion of her estate to the Foundation to set up a scholarship fund targeted at assisting deserving men and women pursuing an education in the field of information technology. Betty, a former President of the Washington D.C. Chapter in 1972, served several years as that Chapter's Association Director (now Chapter Liaison) and also was President of the Mid-Atlantic Region. She was always a very strong advocate for AITP and the opportunities it provides to members. She particularly wanted to be able to continue supporting and encouraging personal and professional growth and enable access to career advancement.

The endowment created a national scholarship that is awarded annually to support university students who are seeking an education in an accredited degree program related to information technology. Candidates are evaluated on demonstrated scholastic achievement, leadership, financial need and quality of the application. The selection process is administered by the Foundation Regents.

The following are the winners of the Betty Stevens-Frecknall Scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year:

Cheryl Kay Books, Fox Valley Technical College, Appleton, WI

Anthony Reynolds, Blackhawk Technical College, Janesville, WI

Congratulations to Cheryl and Anthony for their achievements!

When Cheryl and Anthony learned of their selection, they told the Foundation:

"I am extremely grateful to receive the national Betty Stevens-Frecknall Scholarship for 2013-2014. Having been selected as this year’s scholarship recipient is a great honor; I find it humbling, because I know you are recognizing me for my academic and leadership achievements. I would like to thank the Foundation for Information Technology Education and AITP for such a generous, financial support towards my higher education. Going back to school as an older student has its challenges, but it also has been very rewarding and filled with significant amounts of personal growth and knowledge. I am lucky to have AITP as part of my student life and look forward to having them as part of my professional life as well. Thank you so much for this generous gift and prestigious honor." Cheryl Kay Books

"I am honored to receive the distinguished Betty Stevens-Frecknall Scholarship award this year. This award has validated my hard work and has pushed me to accomplish even more. The Blackhawk AITP student chapter has got me more involved in the community and campus events. It has expanded my networks which will lead me to further success. The funds will help me achieve my goals and pursue my dreams. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude for the honor of being named a recipient and will continue to strive to achieve my best at Blackhawk Technical College leading to a promising career." Anthony Reynolds

The Foundation will soon be accepting applications for the 2014-2015 scholarships. An article will be published in Information Executive when applications are open.

When the Washington DC Chapter transferred the Betty Stevens-Frecknall Scholarship fund to the Education Foundation, a commitment was made to have a DC chapter member to be part of the award process. We continue to meet this commitment with Tom Kohler, VP for Scholarships. The chapter also contributes to the Stevens-Frecknall scholarship fund each year. Jack Roof, Treasurer.
